Radiofrequency (RF) therapy, also called radio frequency skin tightening, is a nonsurgical method of tightening skin which can be used to treat facial and body skin. This procedure involves using energy waves to heat the deep layer of your skin (dermis). This heat stimulates the production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid to reduce the appearance of fine lines and loose skin.

As people age, their cells produce less collagen, which leads to sagging skin and wrinkles. Around age 35 to 40, the quantity and quality of your collagen begins to decline.

Radio frequency skin tightening is a perfect solution to this, helping skin cells continue to produce collagen and make skin appear tightened and ‘youthful’.

At EF MEDISPA we’ve been practicing this innovative technique for some time. In fact, it’s one of our favourite skin tightening treatments for the face and body.

So, with our professional experience in mind, we’re going to answer a few commonly asked questions about the technique, its safety and what results you can expect.

How does it work, and what is the process of radiofrequency therapy?

Radiofrequency skin tightening is a non-invasive, clinically backed treatment designed to firm, life and contour the skin, without surgery or downtime.

How it works

RF technology uses radiofrequency waves to safely deliver controlled heat deep into the dermis (the middle layer of the skin). This heat raises tissue temperature to between 50–75°C, which:

  • Stimulates fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin
  • Activates heat-shock proteins, which trigger the skin’s natural healing and firming response
  • Improves blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, helping skin appear smoother and more even toned

As the collagen fibres contract and regenerate, the skin gradually becomes tighter, firmer and more youthful looking.

The treatment process

  • Your practitioner will begin by applying a cooling gel or conductive lotion to the area being treated
  • A handheld RF device is moved over the skin in circular or sweeping motions, delivering focused energy

Who would benefit from radiofrequency skin tightening treatments?

Radiofrequency skin tightening is suitable for a wide range of people, but it is especially effective for those showing early to moderate signs of ageing.

Ideal candidates include:

  • Clients in their 30s to 50s
  • Those experience mild to moderate skin laxity
  • People with fine lines or the beginning of deeper wrinkles
  • Those with slight jowling, nasofobial folds or sagging skin on the face or neck

RF is also popular for targeting areas of loose skin on the abdomen, thighs, arms or post-pregnancy belly.

Which areas of the body can radiofrequency treat?

Radiofrequency skin tightening is a versatile treatment that can be used safely and effectively on multiple areas of the face and body. It is especially beneficial for patients with loose, sagging skin, as well as for contouring and improving skin texture.

Commonly treated areas using radiofrequency include:

  • Neck and decolletage
  • Hands
  • Thighs and buttocks
  • Knees
  • Back and bra line
  • Abdomen
  • Love handles and flanks
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Arms

What are the benefits of radiofrequency therapy?

Radiofrequency targets wrinkles and skin sagging. Studies have shown that after 6 weeks of RF therapy, skin gradually improves, showing fewer signs of ageing.

In addition to reducing fine lines and wrinkles, RF treatment has many other benefits:

  • No healing time is required, meaning daily life can continue as normal after the treatment – However it is important to follow aftercare advise to get the best results.
  • This process helps tackle sun damage that causes the collagen in skin to break down by re-introducing the production of collagen.
  • An 8-week treatment will show significant improvements in skin elasticity.
  • RF therapy increases hyaluronic acid in the skin, which is a natural moisturising skin barrier. This will keep skin looking and feeling fresh and will reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
  • This treatment can also help with facial acne.
  • RF therapy does not only target facial skin, but it can also be used to target areas of the body that have stretch marks, cellulite, and scars.

Is radiofrequency skin tightening safe?

RF treatments are safe for all skin types if performed by a skincare expert in a clinic or medical facility.

This wave-based therapy is calibrated to be performed on all skin types and colours, with minimal side effects. These treatments are FDA-approved because the expert is allowed to control the temperature and monitor it.

What to expect during Radiofrequency skin tightening

As radiofrequency is a non-invasive treatment, there is no need for anaesthetic. Your therapist will use the RF device directly on your skin, making it a quick and convenient procedure with minimal discomfort.

  1. The treatment process: A handheld applicator delivers controlled radiofrequency energy, producing a gentle warming sensation on the surface and in deeper layers of skin. Many clients compare it to a soothing warm massage.
  2. Session duration and frequency: Each RF treatment session typically lasts 30-60 minutes, depending on the area being treated. A full course usually involves around 6 sessions, spaced 3-4 weeks apart, to deliver optimal results.
  3. Downtime and recovery: There is no anaesthetic, no incision and no downtime. You can return to work or your daily activities immediately after your session.

Potential side effects from radiofrequency treatments

Most clients report a comfortable warming or gentle tingling sensation. Our practitioners monitor the heat carefully to ensure it stays pleasant and beneficial.

Mild and temporary reactions may include:

  • Tingling or warmth in the treated area, often felt immediately after the session
  • Redness or slight swelling, which usually resolves within a few hours
  • Mild sensitivity or tenderness in the skin
  • Dryness or tightness, especially if you have sensitive skin

These effects are normal and temporary, typically subsiding within a few hours to a day. Most clients return to their regular routine immediately after treatment with no downtime.

How often can radiofrequency therapy sessions be done?

Radiofrequency treatments can be performed every 3 to 4 weeks during an initial course and can be modified to suit certain skin types and goals. The number of sessions required will depend on factors such as age, type of skin and the visibility of wrinkles and fine lines.

To maintain the results of this treatment, it is advised that treatments are carried out every 3 to 4 months after an initial treatment block.

What aftercare does radiofrequency therapy require?

Proper aftercare is essential to maximise the benefits of your RF skin tightening therapy and ensure your skin heals safely and effectively.

  • Gently wash skin, do not use scrubs, or rub vigorously on RF treated skin areas.
  • Don’t use any chemical or laser treatments after the RF therapy. Microdermabrasion, waxing, or use of depilatories are not recommended for the next 3-4 weeks.
  • Stay well hydrated for best results.
  • Ask a skincare specialist what ingredients are excluded from being used after RF treatment.

How long does it take to see the results of radiofrequency skin tightening?

While some clients may notice a subtle improvement in skin tone and firmness immediately after their first session, radiofrequency skin tightening works gradually, with the most visible results appearing over time.

Typically, a fully course of 6 to 8 sessions spaced over 3 to 5 months is recommended to achieve optimal results. This allows your body to naturally stimulate collagen and elastin production in response to the controlled heat delivered during the treatment.

The skin continues to improve for up to six months after your final session, as collagen remodelling progresses. During this time, you can expect:

  • A noticeable lift
  • Improved elasticity
  • Smoother texture

How long does radiofrequency skin tightening last?

RF treatments provide lasting results without surgery, but they aren’t permanent.

After completing a course of sessions, results typically develop over 3-6 months and can last 1 to 2 years with proper maintenance.

To keep your skin firm and lifted. It is recommended to have maintenance treatments every 3 to 6 months. Regular upkeep helps sustain collagen production and keep your skin looking youthful for longer.
